    faq // Octopus Agile questions

    What is Octopus Agile?

Agile Octopus is an electricity tariff where the price changes every half-hour, based on wholesale prices. Octopus publishes the next day's prices each afternoon. Prices are often lowest overnight and when it is windy, and highest between 4pm and 7pm.

When are tomorrow's Agile prices published?

Octopus usually publishes the next day's Agile prices at around 4pm UK time. Halfhour checks the Octopus API every 15 minutes, so the new prices appear here as soon as they are out.

How far ahead can you forecast Agile prices?

Halfhour forecasts 14 days ahead. Beyond the published prices, a model trained on recent Agile prices and weather forecasts (wind, temperature and sunshine) estimates each half-hour, with a likely range that widens further out.

How accurate is the Agile price forecast?

In the latest test, forecasts made with weather forecasts from 3 days earlier missed the real Agile price by an average of 5.8p/kWh in South West England. That is about 30% better than using the average price for that time of day. It is re-tested every time the forecast runs.

    Can Agile prices go negative?

Yes. When there is more power than demand, usually on windy nights or sunny weekend afternoons, Agile prices can drop below zero and you are paid to use electricity.

What is the most Agile can cost?

Octopus caps Agile import prices at 100p/kWh including VAT.

    What is Agile Outgoing?

Agile Outgoing is Octopus's export tariff for solar panels and home batteries. It also pays a different price every half-hour, usually highest in the 4pm to 7pm peak.

Which version of Agile am I on?

Most people who joined Agile from late 2022 onwards are on a version with exactly the same prices as the current one, and that is what this page shows by default. If you joined in 2018 to early 2022, you may still be on the original version, which caps every half-hour at 33.33p/kWh before VAT. Your Octopus account shows the tariff name. Pick "Agile 2018" in the tariff setting above to see your actual prices; the cheap times are the same either way.

    Which region am I in?

Agile prices differ slightly between the 14 GB electricity regions. Your region is shown on your Octopus bill as a letter from A to P, or you can pick the area you live in from the list on this page.
